Thundr, Reviewed: Moderation First, Signup Never

Thundr is free to start and free to keep using. There is no account, no email, no download. You open it in a browser, allow camera and microphone, and you are matched.

The paid part is Boost, an optional upgrade to the matching experience priced at about 6.99 US dollars for thirty minutes. It is a one off purchase for a window of time, not a subscription that renews on you.

That matters more than it sounds. A lot of random chat services either meter you by the minute or lock the useful half of the product behind a monthly plan. Thundr does neither. The free tier is the actual product and Boost is genuinely optional.

The differentiator is moderation, and it is unusual to lead with. Random video chat has an obvious and well documented problem with what strangers put on camera, and most services treat it as something to handle after the fact through reports.

Thundr runs detection while the stream is live. Nudity, hate speech and abuse get caught in the moment rather than three reports later, and humans review what the automated pass flags. It does not make the service perfect, but it changes the odds of the first thirty seconds.

The privacy posture is consistent with that. Encrypted streams, no stored chat logs, minimal data collection, an anonymous text mode. If you have avoided random video chat because of what tends to happen on it, this is the part of Thundr worth reading twice.
